Executing a Sarbanes Oxley IT Audit  by Johnston Michelle

My previous article in this series described how to prepare your organization for auditing. Now well delve into the audit itself—whats involved and how to survive it.

What To Audit

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (hereafter simply Sarbanes-Oxley) is designed to ensure the following within a business:

There are sufficient controls to prevent fraud misuse and/or loss of financial data/transactions.

There are controls to enable speedy detection if and when such problems happen.

Effective action is taken to limit the effects of such problems.

In many companies most of these controls are IT-based.

Not only must controls be in place; they must be effective and it must be possible to note exceptions caught by the controls and follow audit trails in order to take appropriate action in response to those exceptions. This requirement puts a new pressure on IT that until now few IT departments have faced. To read the remainder of this article go to http://www.informit.com/articles/article.asp?p=337041

Planning an IT Audit for Sarbanes Oxley Compliance  by Johnston Michelle

Because the Enron and WorldCom scandals got so much attention and because the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 affects every public company—and many small companies are voluntarily complying—a great deal of money is being spent on compliance. In fact in excess of $2.5 billion is expected to be spent on Sarbanes-Oxley compliance-related work in 2004 alone (source: AMR Research).

Approximately 20% of that cost is expected to relate directly to IT systems work—in fact a survey of 60 Fortune 1000 companies found 85% of companies predicting that Sarbanes-Oxley will require significant changes in IT and application infrastructure. Section 404 of Sarbanes the section most likely to involve IT auditors is extremely rigorous mandating an annual management assessment of internal controls and procedures for financial reporting and requiring an independent auditor to attest to managements assessment. Under section 404 its IT managements responsibility to ensure that the documentation and processes are in place before the independent auditor has to come onsite to carry out the attestation review in order to reduce the chances of signs of a material weakness in next years management letter. Thus its inappropriate for IT management to wait until the independent auditor arrives onsite to find out what needs to be changed. IT management needs to have found all the issues and be working actively on remediation of those issues as early as possible in the process; when the independent auditor arrives ideally most issues have either been resolved or are well on the way to being resolved.

How To Carry Out A Security Audit Pt1  by Johnston Michelle
mishj@yahoo.com on Yahoo! Messenger

Introduction

Your manager has told you that in the light of recent events in the US it is your job to ensure that your systems security is up to scratch.

Where do you start?

Get in a security consultant? Do it yourself? Get a member of your staff to do it?

Before you can decide it will be useful to know what is involved in carrying out a security audit of your systems so that you can decide which option is best to take – i.e whether or not you have the skills required in house (and if not whether or not the security consultant you hire has!).

The first article about Security Audits looks at the business aspects of a security audit.

The second article in this series looks at the technical aspects.
